Steve Payne’s work is rooted in the everyday: the rooms we sit in, the roads we travel on, the countryside we walk through. These simple experiences provide the raw material for a more complex reflection on contemporary society and the various ways in which the human presence has made its mark. Landscape, narrative and allegory are brought together in paintings which resist formal classification but create allusive fusions which reflect his deep interest and longstanding engagement with the traditional genres and formats of Western European art.

He has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, and has work in many private and public collections in the UK, France, Belgium, Australia and Canada.

Recent Exhibitions have included : The John Moore’s Painting Prize 2018; The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2018, 2019 and 2021.

Steve Payne lives in Kenilworth and works from a studio in central Birmingham.

Until 2018 he worked as a Lecturer in Art and Design at Birmingham City University.
